Some people have everything figured out—Andrea Nash is not one of those people。

After being kicked out of the Order of the Knights of Merciful Aid, Andrea’s whole existence is in shambles。 All she can do is to try to put herself back together, something made easier by working for Cutting Edge, a small investigative firm owned by her best friend Kate Daniels。

When several shapeshifters working for Raphael Medrano—the male alpha of the Clan Bouda and Andrea’s former lover—die unexpectedly at a dig site, Andrea is assigned to investigate…and must work with Raphael。 As Andrea’s search for the killer leads her into the secret underbelly of supernatural Atlanta, she knows that dealing with her feelings for Raphael might have to take a back seat to saving the world…

Not quite Kate Daniels, but an enjoyable read nonetheless

I read this a while ago but apparently didn't record it on Goodreads。 I enjoyed seeing the world of Kate Daniels from another viewpoint, and this was an interesting one。 I particularly enjoyed seeing Roman in a different light, since he's one of my favorite supporting characters。 Fun mystery。 I read this a while ago but apparently didn't record it on Goodreads。 I enjoyed seeing the world of Kate Daniels from another viewpoint, and this was an interesting one。 I particularly enjoyed seeing Roman in a different light, since he's one of my favorite supporting characters。 Fun mystery。 。。。more

I liked this a whole lot more than I expected to。 Andrea in the past did not impress me as a character。 As Kate Daniels' sidekick she seemed both Kate-like and -lite。 In this book I still found her a bit too much like Kate, but I loved the friendship between the two women。 The book is actually a duplex, with a novel-length story from Andrea's POV followed by a novella featuring Kate and Curran。 The actions of the two stories occur simultaneously, and there is a single scene at the Cutting Edge a I liked this a whole lot more than I expected to。 Andrea in the past did not impress me as a character。 As Kate Daniels' sidekick she seemed both Kate-like and -lite。 In this book I still found her a bit too much like Kate, but I loved the friendship between the two women。 The book is actually a duplex, with a novel-length story from Andrea's POV followed by a novella featuring Kate and Curran。 The actions of the two stories occur simultaneously, and there is a single scene at the Cutting Edge agency offices that gets told first from Andrea's view and then later from Kate's。 Upon re-reading, the slight differences in the way the scene plays are both amusing and revealing, a nice trick。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Okay, this explains a few things that Rises glossed over completely。 I like that。 I don't like this story's plot exactly but I do like the characters outside of Kate's pov。 I like Ascanio a hundred times more, seeing him respecting Andrea was great。 I liked it。 Andrea being extra as heck。 Roman being the most wholesome of dark priests (except when they had him say retarded pants, I swear, some of these one liners are out of no where and so randomly awful)。Maybe it's because I wasn't 100% paying Okay, this explains a few things that Rises glossed over completely。 I like that。 I don't like this story's plot exactly but I do like the characters outside of Kate's pov。 I like Ascanio a hundred times more, seeing him respecting Andrea was great。 I liked it。 Andrea being extra as heck。 Roman being the most wholesome of dark priests (except when they had him say retarded pants, I swear, some of these one liners are out of no where and so randomly awful)。Maybe it's because I wasn't 100% paying attention to this story by the end but this story wasn't my fave。 The romance plot wasn't terribly interesting and the god plot was also not interesting to me。 But worst of all was Raphael。 He is so funny and I hate him。 He is such a fool, so silly, he actually tried to make her JEALOUS after he dumped her and sure she needed a break and walked away but he def dumped her。 She needed a minute her life was literally falling apart。 Whatever。 I'm over it。And it's not just because Roman is more interesting, funny and charming and if Andrea was into him it would make more sense imo。 Rly。 I'm totes over it。 I also see now why Barabas is a fan favourite。 I agree。 。。。more

We get to witness firsthand the fight between Anubis (jackal headed Egyptian god of the dead) and Apep (Chaos in ancient Egypt; a venomous serpent god)。 Originally, Bast the cat goddess killed Apep but history was rewritten to claim that Ra killed him (“priests were men and we can’t have the big enemy getting killed by a girl, can we now?”)。 It was also super fun to meet Hakon again, the undead Viking who was killed by Cherokee tribes (“skraelinger” peoples)。 The author waxes eloquent about frac We get to witness firsthand the fight between Anubis (jackal headed Egyptian god of the dead) and Apep (Chaos in ancient Egypt; a venomous serpent god)。 Originally, Bast the cat goddess killed Apep but history was rewritten to claim that Ra killed him (“priests were men and we can’t have the big enemy getting killed by a girl, can we now?”)。 It was also super fun to meet Hakon again, the undead Viking who was killed by Cherokee tribes (“skraelinger” peoples)。 The author waxes eloquent about fractals, which I very much enjoyed。Great book!! 。。。more

Swift, gritty, and violent, this novel is a classic Kate Daniels, even though the heroine is not Kate but her friend, Andrea。 I'm not a fan of Kate Daniels series - it is too dark and bloody for me - and I haven't read many books in the series, but I enjoyed reading this one。 It is written very well, and although there is lots of fights and gore on the pages (meh), the action flows without stop and pulls the reader in from start to finish。On the other hand, the romance between Andrea and Raphael Swift, gritty, and violent, this novel is a classic Kate Daniels, even though the heroine is not Kate but her friend, Andrea。 I'm not a fan of Kate Daniels series - it is too dark and bloody for me - and I haven't read many books in the series, but I enjoyed reading this one。 It is written very well, and although there is lots of fights and gore on the pages (meh), the action flows without stop and pulls the reader in from start to finish。On the other hand, the romance between Andrea and Raphael is crazy。 Both of them seem set on hurting each other to prove their dominance and assuage their pride。 Not the way I see love, but I suppose it is different for different personalities。 Andrea is a bitch, and Raphael is a jackass, so maybe for them, it works。And then, there is a mishmash of malevolent deities and unhinged mythology coming into play half-way through the tale。Overall: not a bad story, all things considered。 Not my favorite by a long shot, but at least it wasn't boring。 The book also contains a bonus Kate Daniels novella Magic Gifts 。。。more

I liked Andrea in previous books including her novella Magic mourns and was looking forward to her full length novel。 Andrea has been a badass。 I have liked her friendship and parternship with Kate which was pretty much the only thing that stayed true in this novel。 Aside from that this book showed a completely different Andrea which I felt didn't do justice to her character build-up。 Her interactions with Ascanio were that of a bully during the first half of the novel。 She goes from hating boud I liked Andrea in previous books including her novella Magic mourns and was looking forward to her full length novel。 Andrea has been a badass。 I have liked her friendship and parternship with Kate which was pretty much the only thing that stayed true in this novel。 Aside from that this book showed a completely different Andrea which I felt didn't do justice to her character build-up。 Her interactions with Ascanio were that of a bully during the first half of the novel。 She goes from hating boudas and never wanting to be a pack member to becoming a complete power crazy person who is willing to strong arm everyone in her way to get to the top。 Her relationship with Raphael was also strange and unhealthy。 She is crazy jealous and in love one moment to breaking up in another。 Raphael is also taking the mating rituals allowed in shapeshifter society to stalkerish and creepy levels。 In a nutsheell, this book falls below the expectations。This dialogue did it for me。 I know she was trying to get the boys out of the jail but still this was completely unnecessary:“Boys will be boys, Sheriff。 You know how it is, they have fun and we pay the bills。” 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book。 Since Andrea was introduced in the Kate Daniels series, with hints about her past and secrets she was hiding to just exist, and then the hot and cold relationship with Raphael being added to the mix, I was intrigued to see how the everything in her complicated life would be resolved。 This was a good book, it used the romantic relationship as a way to force Andrea to re-evaluate how she was living her life and used that as a way to change her approach and become strong I really enjoyed this book。 Since Andrea was introduced in the Kate Daniels series, with hints about her past and secrets she was hiding to just exist, and then the hot and cold relationship with Raphael being added to the mix, I was intrigued to see how the everything in her complicated life would be resolved。 This was a good book, it used the romantic relationship as a way to force Andrea to re-evaluate how she was living her life and used that as a way to change her approach and become stronger, There were many fight scenes and mysteries which just added to the complexity of the Kate Daniels world。 I recommend this book and was glad Andrea got a full novel and not a just a novella。 The novella at the end was also quite good and showed more insight into the relationship of Curran and Kate。 。。。more

Andi tells a storyFirst, I'm going to assume you've read the first five books of the Kate Daniels series。 If you haven't, then this review may contain spoilers。 At this point in the Kate Daniels world, Kate and her best friend, Andrea Nash (Andi) have been kicked out of the Order。 Andi has come out of the closet as a werehyena -- actually, a hyenawere, an important technical distinction -- but yes, she's a furry and we know it。 And we know at this point that Kate is the daughter of the evil vamp Andi tells a storyFirst, I'm going to assume you've read the first five books of the Kate Daniels series。 If you haven't, then this review may contain spoilers。 At this point in the Kate Daniels world, Kate and her best friend, Andrea Nash (Andi) have been kicked out of the Order。 Andi has come out of the closet as a werehyena -- actually, a hyenawere, an important technical distinction -- but yes, she's a furry and we know it。 And we know at this point that Kate is the daughter of the evil vampire lord Roland and that she has blood magic, which she has not mastered。 Kate is a powerful sorceress。 Andi is not。 Aside from her shapeshifting, she is not magic at all。 Her superpower, so to speak, is that she's a firearms expert。 Also, she's canny and vicious in hand-to-hand combat。 So, basically, the toughest chick on the block, except possibly Kate。 The cover picture is Andi。 There are actually two novels in the book, Gunmetal Magic, which is told by Andi, and Magic Gifts, told by Kate。 Gunmetal Magic is 75% of the book (according to the Kindle progress meter), and Magic Gifts is the remaining quarter。 So it's really only a novella。 The main course, Gunmetal Magic, is a murder mystery that Andi has the problem of solving and somehow wrapping up。 I don't think it'll come as a surprise to anyone if I tell you that the murder mystery involves magic, and that she has to fight magic beasts。 Plus, her love life is all entangled therein。Andi spends much of the book in a transport of lust directed at Raphael。 What's more, in her narration she is loquacious about her feelings。 Now, your mileage may vary, but I found this tedious。 I get that Ilona Andrews want to show that Andi is a bouda with a powerful sex drive who is passionate about her mate。 But, well, do you ever feel you'd like to say to an author, "OK, I got it after the first three times。 You don't need to keep telling me。" I did。 There is a bit too much of the lust-loquacity for my taste even in the main Kate Daniels series。 (Partly that's because I find Curran to be a crashing bore。) But it was really over the top here。The dessert novella, Magic Gifts, is told by Kate and takes place at the same time as the events of Gunmetal Magic。 There is some overlap between the two stories, but not much。 Kate and Curran are dealing with a mostly distinct problem in Magic Gifts。 I enjoyed this story more than Gunmetal Magic。 。。。more

Disappointed by this book。 While I love the main series, I'm just not sure the authors are able to move away from Kate's perspective well。 I found Andrea more annoying that I ever did in the series, and her issues with Raphael seemed like petty drama。 The plot though was as a great as ever, and Roman stood out as the most interesting character in the whole book。 I'm actually sad we didn't get more of him in the series as a whole。 Disappointed by this book。 While I love the main series, I'm just not sure the authors are able to move away from Kate's perspective well。 I found Andrea more annoying that I ever did in the series, and her issues with Raphael seemed like petty drama。 The plot though was as a great as ever, and Roman stood out as the most interesting character in the whole book。 I'm actually sad we didn't get more of him in the series as a whole。 。。。more
